Three Ted Talks To Get You Fired Up For Your Exam

When you have exam after exam stretching ahead of you, it can sometimes be hard to stay positive or to keep sight of your end goal – those grades you need to succeed in life after school and college.

The Smartivate course provides guidance on how to keep motivated and maintain your confidence throughout exam season. But for an extra boost we’ve compiled a list of our three favourite TED talks, a collection of powerful talks covering a host of topics, with one goal in mind – to spread ideas and inspiration.

1.    ‘The Key to success? Grit’ – By Angela Lee Duckworth

In her six-minute talk, Angela Lee Duckworth, a management consultant turned New York maths teacher, says the key to doing well at school and in life isn’t good looks, IQ or the ability to learn quickly and easily – it’s grit. “Grit is passion and perseverance for very long-term goals,” she says. “Grit is having stamina. Grit is sticking with your future, day in, day out, not just for the week, not just for the month, but for years, and working really hard to make that future a reality. Grit is living life like it's a marathon, not a sprint.”

2.    ‘8 secrets of success’ – By Richard St. John

After a girl on a plane asked him, "What really leads to success?" Richard St John spent 10 years asking over 500 high achievers in many fields what helped them succeed. The answers are distilled into his 3-minute talk, 8 secrets of success, and they are not to do with being smart or lucky. The 8 traits of successful people are, he explains, being passionate, hard working, focused, persistent, pushing themselves, coming up with ideas, practising until they’re good at something, and wanting to serve others.

3.    ‘A plea for education’ – By Michelle Obama

Finally, you don’t get much more inspiring than the speech Michelle Obama gave on her first official visit to the UK in 2009. Although she gave her talk to an all-girls school, what she says applies just as much to boys.

“I loved getting As. I liked being smart. I liked being on time. I liked getting my work done,” she says of her time at school. “And you too with these same values can control your own destiny. You too can pave the way. You too can realise your dreams… It doesn’t matter whether you come from a council estate or a country estate. Your success will be determined by your own fortitude, your own confidence, your own individual hard work.”

It won’t be easy, she warns, but you already have everything you need to succeed.
